What is the DELF B1?

At level B1, the user becomes independent. He/she can maintain interaction: he/she can understand and maintain a discussion and give his/her opinion. He/she is capable of dealing with situations likely to arise in daily life. 

DELF B1 examination is based on level B1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). 

Here are the skills that you will need to master if you would like to take the DELF B1 exam:

Grammatical structures:

  • The agreement of the past participle with the subject (être) and with the COD (avoir) in passé composé

  • The past perfect tense – Le plus-que-parfait

  • Indirect speech (present and past tense) – Le discours indirect

  • Sequence of tenses – La concordance des temps

  • The subjunctive: possibility & obligation – Le subjonctif

  • The passive and the active voice 

  • The gerund: expressing manner, simultaneity and condition – Le gérondif

  • Double pronouns: me, te, se, nous, vous, se / le, la / lui, leur, les / y / en

  • Possessive pronouns: le mien, le tien, la tienne, le sien…

  • Demonstrative pronouns: celui, celui-ci, celui-là, ceux-ci…

  • Prepositions and adverbs of time: avant, depuis…

  • Prepositions and adverbs of place

  • Logical connectors for the chronology of a speech: d’abord, ensuite, enfin…

  • Logical connectors for the consequence : puisque, donc, c’est pourquoi …

  • The conjunction “POUR QUE” + subjunctive

Vocabulary:

What is the DELF B1 test? 

A good way of preparing for DELF B1 is to see what the test consists of. There are 4 parts in the test:

  1. Listening (25 minutes – score 25)

    Comprehension questionnaires dealing with several recordings

  2. Reading (45 minutes – score 25)

    Comprehension questionnaires dealing with several written documents

    • extract useful information concerning a particular task

    • analyze the contents of a document of general interest.

  3. Writing (45 minutes – score 25)

    Express personal opinions on a general topic :essay, letter, article, etc

  4. Speaking (5 minutes maximum preparation: 10 minutes -score 25)

    Test in three parts:

    • a guided conversation (2 at 3 minutes)

    • an interactive exercise (3 at 4 minutes)

    • expressing an opinion on a document designed to elicit a reaction (5 at 7 minutes).

You will have 10 minutes to prepare for parts 2 and 3.
